Sketchbook Project 2013

This year I took part in The Sketchbook Project.  Rather than have a random theme, I chose “Creatures” as I love filling my sketchbooks with little characters, mythical creatures and sketches of various animals.  It was an excellent challenge that I recommend for any one who likes to draw, sketch or doodle.  My favourites from my book are Old Man Ent, the Thoughtful Goblin and the bushy bear-like guy with the curly antlers.

What’s The Sketchbook Project and how does it work?  - Well, When you sign up, they send you a sketchbook and provide you with a theme.  All you do is fill up the sketchbook and send it back by the deadline. The books go on a travelling exhibition and become part of the Brooklyn Art Library.  You can find out more about it or sign up to take part in the 2014 exhibition here.creatures1 creatures 1 creatures 2 creatures 3 creatures 4 creatures 5 creatures 6 creatures 7 creatures 8 creatures 9 creatures 10 creatures 11 creatures 12creatures 13 creatures 14creatures 16 creatures 15

Puffin

It’s rare these days that I get a weekend where there is nothing planned, so I actually spent some time in the studio, putting paint on canvas!  I spent much of my time playing with oil pastels and acrylic, and I got to say it’s a match made in heaven!  I really felt like I was able to get the best of both worlds, the gestural qualities of the oil pastel and the luminosity of the acrylic paint.  I’m super happy with this little guy!

Sketchbook

I just finished a sketchbook and I always love to look through my old ones to see what I was looking at and thinking about.  I usually complete a sketchbook in 6 months to two years and thought I’d share some of the sketches I drew in my latest one.  I drew this sketch of a woman’s face about a year and a half ago.  I’m pretty sure I had a reference photo for it, but I can’t recall what it was from.  I have always loved the hair.
